Fire and Ice

Posted by Sarah  Published in Quote of the Day

Today’s quote (sorry it’s been so long, life got crazy) is a poem by Robert Frost (as will the rest of this week be) Fire & Ice Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice. From what I’ve tasted of desire I hold with those who favor fire. But if it [...]

Ancestry vs. Agency

Posted by Sarah  Published in Other Articles, Quote of the Day, world

Hey everybody! So I posted a random quote from National Treasure 2 on my facebook page the other day, and my friend brought up a very good point. The quote was from Ben Gates, talking to the President in the tunnels under the cellar. Everything I am is because of my ancestors My friend argued [...]

Nine Long and Tragic Years

Posted by Sarah  Published in Other Articles

September 11, 2001. Three important monuments of sorts were devastatingly destroyed. We will always remember them who died there. Will we, however, remember the fourth airliner? The one that crashed in the Pennsylvania field? We need to remember them as well, for they were war heroes just as much as others who died upon the [...]

Futures

Posted by Sarah  Published in Other Articles, Prediction, Quote of the Day, TNF Files

When you think of the word “future” what do you think of? Do you think of careers and jobs you may have later in life? Your children’s wedding days? Goals you have set for yourself? That’s all well and good….for the NEARBY future. What about for the long term future? Do you see wars or [...]

Toasters of the Future

Posted by Sarah  Published in Other Articles

~This post dedicated to Kelsie~ Toasters have advanced throughout the years. From little metal boxes with grates on one side so you could watch them cook… To completely inclosed, dual- slotted things… And now they even have FOUR slots for those with bigger families who need more toast quicker…. So I ask you: WHAT WILL [...]

The Bestest, Most Amazing-est Thing EVER!!

Posted by Sarah  Published in Other Articles

One word summary? Palindromes. Which, in fact, is not a palindrome. Huh. Anyhoo, palindromes are series of words, numbers or patterns that read the same both forward and backward. Some  examples include: racecar hannah      343 and 1221   Those are some “short and simple” (if you will) palindromes. Then there are more complex, more lengthy [...]

The Best Is Yet to Come

Posted by Sarah  Published in Other Articles

The Best is Yet to Come. Not only is this an epic Frank Sinatra song, but it is also a very true statement in the case of yours truly. You see, Rika has challenged us to a “writers competition” if you will. (We prefer to refer to it as our Ninja-turtle assassination attempt). I just [...]

Do You Want a Side of Doom With That?

Posted by Rika  Published in Entertainment and Media, Prediction, world

The Media loves a good ghost story. They love nothing more than to lure people into their inky clutches and scare them silly with apocalyptic promises and new and improved weight loss tactics. This week, Yahoo!’s helping of Doom included a solar eclipse that threatened to throw the world into turmoil because science and superstition [...]

The Inevitable Ecomony Meltdown: We Told You So

Posted by Rika  Published in world

Really, we don’t brag a lot here. But the article we wrote back in February happened to have a correct prediction in comparing the oncoming recession to the Great Depression. Even President Bush has declared that our “entire economy is in danger” during his pep talk today. I’m beginning to see a trend here.   [...]

Hybrid cars

Posted by Hope  Published in Cars

The only real big difference between normal cars and hybrid cars is that hybrid cars have a special system that captures braking energy, which is then stored in an onboard battery.

People are now picking hybrids because hybrids are the most gasoline efficient of all cars, they typically get 48 to 60 mpg. That’s great, but it’s only about 20% to 35% better than a fuel efficient gasoline powered vehicle such as the Honda Civic in which gets 36 mpg. When you compare prices, however, hybrids cost from $19,000 to $25,000 and gas saver cars cost $14,000 to $17,000.

Not only is the hybrid cars fuel efficient, it is also “green” for the environment, and we all know this website is definitely pro-environment. But hybrid cars offer more than just great fuel economy, they offer many green advantages as well. Where pollution is the worst (large cities), it produces smaller emissions when you’re in those stop-and-go traffic jams.

Applaud Japanese companies because the two hybrid cars that are the most popular are the Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius. Come on, U.S., catch up!

Our world’s in trouble… now what?

Posted by Rika  Published in Environment

What is wrong with our planet? Being America, it’s easy to do what we do best: (no, not eating fast food, although we do that too) import stuff from other countries. We import everything from food to dinky little party favors to food. A good question to ask is what happens when there is a [...]

Websites: harder to manage then you think!

Posted by Rika  Published in Nearby Updates and Info, Other Articles

4:32 PM: hear Calister’s complaints about how the green flowers are too “girly”. Laugh along with him, promise that I’ll look into other templates, but secretly plan his demise.

4:46 PM: Check the site’s status and clap excitedly as I see that someone else BESIDES the staff actually commented!

4:56 PM: Reject Calister’s article on the stupid topics that have nothing to do with the future OR the environment OR technology. In the article rejection email, tell him that his next article should be about ice cream. Write a witty rejection letter in advance.

Philosophy of the Week I

Posted by Socrates  Published in Uncategorized

“It may do us best to not know and be happy, but knowing will, inevitably, make us stronger for the future.” Rika’s Thoughts: This is very true. For example, if one country knew that another country was planning war against the other, it would make them stronger for the war ahead. Or, perhaps, in the [...]

If Only The World Had Listened…

Posted by Rika  Published in Cars, Technology

About two or three years ago on freewebs.com/thenearbyfuture I wrote a particular article about the dangers of using corn as fuel. It was moved to this site earlier in January (view it here) and I thought that it contained some good points. If people had taken the article seriously, then corn and our economy would [...]

The Lost Arts of the Future

Posted by Rika  Published in Other Articles

Have you ever done basket weaving? Probably not. What about cave painting? I doubt it. Those are two of the ‘lost arts’ today. Sure- if you look hard enough you could probably find a basket weaving class somewhere but it isn’t nearly as common today as it was a long time ago. A great question [...]

“Ender’s Game” of the Future?

Posted by Ari  Published in Other Articles

If you haven’t already read it, “Ender’s Game” is a book by Orson Scott Card about the future. They haven’t got to time machines, but it’s mostly about space battles and aliens and (obviously) trying to save the world. In the book, a boy named Ender Wiggin is an intelligent 6-year-old that is asked — [...]
